Death Wish
Death Wish Coffee made its name with boasts about its strength, but they’re getting the wrong kind of press right now thanks to a recall of their Nitro Cold Brew due to the possibility of botulism.
If you’re not familiar: Botulin grows in low oxygen and low acid environments — which causes botulism in humans. According to the FDA, this form of food poisoning causes “general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing… [and] difficulty breathing.” Not what anyone is looking for from their coffee.
Death Wish’s Nitro Cold Brew has not given anyone botulism, this is just them reacting to the results from a Cornell University study which recommended an additional process in how they make Nitro Cold Brew and them working to make sure that nobody gets botulism from their product in the future. However, in a post on their website, they do make it clear that more needs to be done with standards and regulations from the FDA when it comes to “Nitrogen-infused coffee.”
Nitrogen-infused coffee is a fairly new process, in which at the moment, there are few federal standards and regulations through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). With any nitrogen-based products on the market, there is a remote possibility of the risk of Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum), a serious pathogen that can lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulin, in low-acid foods commercialized in reduced oxygen packaging.
Death Wish will kick things back into gear once “an additional step in the manufacturing process is implemented.”
If you have a can of Death Wish Nitro Cold Brew hanging around, take it back to where you bought it or, if you bought it online, throw it in the trash and let the company know so they can give you back your money.
